When they put the 'helmet' on the 'insane' doctor to drill his skull, they used adhesive tape of some kind to fix it to his head. I very seriously doubt such a thing existed in the late 1800s.

That's about the time period when it was developed. Dr. Frankenstein must have been on the cutting edge of technology to have that sitting around his lab.
