Help with a movie (this shouldn't be hard)

I'm having a hard time remembering the actual premise of this movie, but as I think about it, I think at the end a young-ish person is publicly reading a letter or note written by another kid who dies unexpectedly. The kid who's alive gets credit for something the dead kid did, like write this beautiful letter or something, and he's got to figure out how to confess and stop feeling so guilty.
There might even be some homosexual theme going on but I'm not sure.
I think some mainstream stars played parents, and I think I heard a late night talk show host make a wise crack that mentioned it, so it's a somewhat well-known movie.

So what the heck is it? I thought the title was the dead kid's name but I don't want to confuse it even more.

A recent spin on this premise is depicted in Dear Evan Hansen (2021).

That's exactly right ! I knew it would be simple. I tried to come up with some phrases to trigger a proper search and nothing worked. The thread concerning movies about suicide started me thinking about this film but I could not figure out a way to figure it out. Now I feel I should write it down somewhere so it'll get lodged in my head, and I'll have to read up on it.
Thanks a lot. Seems like one of those things that should be easy to recall, but I was lost.

Glad that I could provide you with the movie title!

If it's any value, Dear Evan Hansen reminds me of a great Robin Williams vehicle - World's Greatest Dad (2009). It harbors similar subject matter with a different spin...
