What did you watch this week little grasshopper? (28/04-04/05)CLOSED

What’s up little grasshoppers!!

Let’s do this little song and dance.

My week:

The greasy strangler (2016 TV):
My wife often asked me why I don’t close the living room curtains when I’m there, what with all the people walking by in the street. I always tell her that if they have time to waste looking in my living room, it’s their problem. Me, I feel comfortable when I’m able to see outside. Well while I was watching this movie, for the first time I can remember since I live here, I stood up and I went to close the curtains. It was THAT much trash. Hehe This movie shows humans in some of their worst possible aspects. It’s gross, dumb, weird, evil, it’s very greasy, it has one of the worst soundtracks ever and I fricking liked it. Quite a bit too. It’s dark, deadpan, absurd and abrasive yet it went by fast! This is the kind of crazy shit I expected but didn’t get with Holy Motors back then. Watch The greasy strangler at your own risk but it might pay off if you’re open to this kind of sick depravity. One thing is sure, I won’t forget about it before a long long time. My rating: 7/10

Ready to rumble (2000 TV): It’s my first time revisiting this since my teenage years and I was surprised by how much I remembered about it; The corner store brawl, the waste truck crash, the mobile home etc. Important to note that I watched it in french and it was dubbed in Quebec so it’s not that nice french Canadian way of speaking, it’s that trashy vulgar Quebecker way of speaking (like the movie Slap Shot or Flodder) which makes it even funnier. Another thing that is very cool about this movie is that they managed to gather a bunch of real wrestlers and I felt nostalgic seeing them all again. It’s a good 90’s comedy but never was a favourite of mine. If only it had a cool soundtrack involving the likes of Van Halen and Kid Rock… oh wait… it does! My rating: 6.5/10

Power rangers (2017 TV): When I was a kid I had a Power Rangers phase that lasted about a year. I liked them but wasn’t the biggest fan. Recently, I showed my kids a few episodes and the 1995 movie so now was time we crossed this one off our list too. Funny thing is, I told them they could watch it for 30 minutes then is was bedtime but because it was so long before they actually used their powers and also because the movie was good, we watched the first hour instead. They were happy about that. The movie was good enough for me to lose track of time and my kids enjoyed it a lot even if there were scary parts. Almost looks like a horror movie sometimes. We finished it the next day and it worked out great. Not too shabby at all. My rating: 6.5/10

Cecil B. Demented (Friday night special): This was a wild hit and miss for me. Within 10 minutes I could have a scene I disliked followed by a scene I enjoyed a lot. I failed to feel engaged during the first half but the second half was better. The dialogue and characters were a bit weak but I liked the cast and the story stemmed from a fun and original idea. I would give the first half 5 and the second half 6.5. Now I want a full length movie about Petie the gay stoner driver. Now that’s be something else! My rating: 5.75/10

YellowBrickRoad (Friday late night special): This movie checked enough boxes to make it a positive viewing for me. I think they did a pretty good job for a low budget. I fell asleep exactly 55 minutes in but I finished it the day after. First of all, the sound is a very important element of the film and it successfully had its effect on me. It was eerie enough to weird me out. When the music started to skip, then got really loud and the camera started moving, that was a fun trippy moment. There were actually a few good shots, the cinematographer has nothing to be ashamed of here. The actors also brought their characters to life just enough for me to care a minimum about the story. Then of course there’s the fact that there really isn’t any story to speak of in the proper sense of the word. But it was an experience. My rating: 6/10.

Bloodbath at the House of Death (Saturday night special): Although it partly met my expectations, I can’t say I would rewatch or would recommend to anyone. It has many highlights and very entertaining special effects but it could also be boring at times. I didn’t laugh as much as I thought I would. My rating: 5.5/10

8 heads in a duffle bag (Saturday late night special): It’s not really fair for me to rate this movie since I was distracted for over 40 minutes of its length but it seemed like a fun and silly comedy starring the always reliable Joe Pesci. My attempt at rating: 6/10

The Handmaid’s tale S1:
Episode 7: Strong episode. Very strong. It has a little bit of everything. 8/10
Episode 8: Meh, it was alright but could’ve been way more effective and memorable. 6.5/10

Bloodbath at the House of Death 6/10
8 heads in a duffle bag 5/10

I watched:

After Words 2015 7/10 This was pleasant and enjoyable enough. Fine performances from Marcia Gay Harden and Óscar Jaenada, who have nice chemistry together. A young Jenna Ortega is adorable and delightful, stealing the scenes she is in.

Our Friend 2019 8/10 Good performances from the cast in this well written and effective drama.

Seeking Justice 2011 6/10 This was alright. It's a fairly predictable, mid level action movie with a decent performance from Nicolas Cage.

Satan’s Cheerleaders 1977 5/10 Some amusing moments, but this is nowhere near as fun or entertaining as it should be.

Space Pups 2023 6/10 This was cute. The dogs gave the best performances.

Kill Chain 2019 6/10 This was just okay.

The Lil River Rats and the Adventure of the Lost Treasure 2003 5/10 This was not good, but I didn't hate it. The cinematography and sound are poor and the film feels very amateurish overall. Acting is hit or miss. A couple of the kids did a decent job. Most of the adult performances fell flat and were unconvincing. It's flawed, but has a little charm. A couple of the actors were pretty cute.

Madame Web 2024 6/10 This wasn't that bad. The story and the writing are the weakest parts. I felt Dakota Johnson was miscast. Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O'Connor were fine in their roles, although their characters could have been better developed. Most of the supporting actors were decent. The villain didn't make much of an impact though. This got a lot of hate and really bad reviews, but this isn't even one of the ten worst films of this year. it is totally watchable and has some good moments.

Jiu Jitsu 2020 4/10 This was not good. Performances are mediocre, at best, writing is bad and it isn't very entertaining or fun.

The Humanity Bureau 2017 4/10 This was surprisingly boring for the most part. A couple fun Cage moments. Not recommended, unless you are a Cage completionist.

Stolen 2012 6/10 Cage has some decent moments and the film is moderately entertaining. The screenplay and score aren't very good, but it is watchable and better than some of Cage's other bad films.

Turtles All the Way Down 2024 8/10 Isabela Merced is very good here and I also liked Cree's performance. Felix Mallard fell a little flat and didn't make much of an impact. The subplot about the missing billionaire felt unnecessary and underdeveloped. Overall, there are some effective emotional moments here, thanks to a mostly well written screenplay and the strength of Merced's performance.

The Idea of You 2024 6/10 I think Anne Hathaway was miscast for this and I didn't believe the chemistry or relationship between her character and Nicholas Galitzine. The story is alright, albeit a little predictable and formulaic. It's not a bad film, just average.

Unfrosted 2024 8/10 Featuring a sweet cast, Unfrosted is deliciously silly and goofy goodness. The dialogue is ridiculous and the story is zany fun, frosted with tasty performances, including two of the most surprising and unlikely cameos you could imagine. I laughed and had a good time. Unfrosted may not be cinematically nutritious, but it is a light and enjoyable treat.

211 2018 5/10 This is poorly written and not very entertaining. Cage has a couple good moments though.

The World’s Greatest Sinner 1962 6/10 This is only mildly interesting. I think they could have done a lot more with it.

Night Swim 2024 3/10 Night Swim wins the prize for being the worst film of the year (so far). I can't imagine anything worse coming out this year. The film is not entertaining or even mildly interesting, neither fun nor scary. The screenplay is poorly written and most of the actors feel miscast.

Point Blank 1967 6/10 This was just alright. I felt it dragged at times and wasn't as entertaining as it should have been. Based on the film's reputation, I was expecting more.

Stop Making Sense 1984 7/10 This is well filmed, but I wasn't a big fan of the music.

Bloodbath at the House of Death 1984 6/10 This is a little uneven and I'm not sure if it makes sense, but there are some memorable fun moments. The effects are cool and Vincent Price is effective with limited screen time. Not everything works, but it is amusing enough to make it worth a watch.

8 Heads in a Duffel Bag 1997 5/10 This was not very interesting or entertaining.

How do you like my review of The greasy strangler?

Also, when you reply, it would be nice if you would also rate the movies I’ve seen. :)

reply

It's exactly what one should read before watching it. The movie is like Gentlemen Broncos. It works while it doesn't work and you can't help but love how strange and odd it is. I still do the bullshit artist comment with my wife.

Your ready to rumble review is spot on. Now you need to see "you can kill David Arquette."

reply

Nice!

I HAVE SEEN GENTLEMEN BRONCOS ONCE...WHEN IT WAS FRESH...I LIKED IT...I THINK...PARTS OF THAT MOVIE ARE STILL WITH ME THOUGH.

It has stayed with me like the bride entity from insidious.

Oh crap! Completely wrong thread, lol. I need a new pair of glasses 🤣

😂

That was the only explanation I could find!

reply

Not actually had chance to watch it yet, but I rented 'Hush,Hush, Sweet Charlotte' which I think is along the same vein of 'Whatever happened to baby Jane'. Hopefully I'll have time at the weekend.

I love these random older films that I stumble across, that I've never heard of. Whatever Happened To Baby Jane was a great film.

reply

Cool, cool. Did you watch it yet?

reply

Yes I did.

Bette Davis was great in this. Played a vulnerable character which is unusual from the other films I've seen her in.

I wouldn't really recommend it as there are countless other films with the same story that are superior to this film, but it was enjoyable enough. Long though at 2 hours.

5/10.

Late like always!🙂

Movies:

-The Jackal (1997)
Yeah, this movie doesn't really work for me. It expects us to root for terrorists. The original made more sense.

-The Room (2003)
Oh hi, doggie! The traditional rewatch of this amazing movie, this time accompanied by shots of scotchka. (Which is even worse than the movie!)

TV shows

-Dallas - marathon

-Home Improvement - marathon

reply

The Jackal: Due for rewatch but remember liking it.

I’d love to be there to partake in one of your live session of The room! Sounds like fun.

reply

I'm sure it would be even more fun as well with some crazy French Canadian by my side.😘

reply

It sure would!

The three days I work from home I get to watch Road to Avonlea from 10-11. Finishing the “women must have the right to vote” one right now. I’ve watched 4 episodes in the past weeks. Thought of you each time! :)

I feel so flattered! 😊
