I think it's all part of the whole "I demand you look at me damn it!" mentality.
But in any case, hair modification is transient. I told my sons they were not getting tattoos before 18 or get their college paid for free and clear if they had any. Once they graduated they were on their own. With regards to their hair - they could do what they want because it always grows out.
Whether they got one hidden somewhere in a small act of defiance is something I don't know, but I do know that they are both in their 30s and they are GLAD they never got visible tattoos. Several of their friends did and now regret them.
With regards to their hair, I told them they could do what they wanted and I wouldn't make a peep as hair styles or colors are not a permanent change. My youngest did some weird things with his hair but now that he's got a great job, he dresses better and his hair is now neat and professional.
