How the heck did Matt survive 20 seasons?

I just watched the 'Shooting Stopover' episode. Matt is going to transport bad guy Anthony Caruso to Wichita by stagecoach where Anthony probably will be hung. So Matt handcuffs himself to Anthony; Matt's right wrist to Anthony's left. And then talks to Chester, with his back turned to Anthony. What's wrong with this? Matt's right handed so his holstered gun is right there for Anthony to grab! Or Anthony could twist Matt's right arm behind Matt and grab the gun with his (Anthony's) right hand. Really careless on Matt's part, especially considering Anthony had just told Matt that if he was ever back in Dodge, he would put a bullet in Matt. If Matt practiced handcuff procedure the same with a real baddie like Leo Gordon, the syndication title would have been 'Chester' not 'Marshal Dillon'.

Matt has been known to grab the hand of an outlaw as they went for their guns.

Only Superman could outdraw the Sheriff of Dodge.
