Help needed - Best Eastwood Episodes

Hi guys,

You might be able to help me here, which if you could would be great :) I will keep it brief.

I am writing a long academic essay on the westerns of Clint Eastwood, and feel I need to mention his stint on Rawhide. However I have never watched this show, and wouldn't even know where to begin to find our more about his character.

I was wondering whether anyone here could recommend the best episodes featuring Rowdy, by which I mean ones where you get a glimpse of his character, or learn about him, or where he gets to really take a staring role. Any info on those would be great, especially if you can give a brief reason why the episode is so useful for learning about him!

So basically, any episodes that are special or you think would be useful relating (in any way) to Rowdy.

Thanks guys!

Hard to help here as I believe the majority of Rawhide fans are Eric Fleming fans rather than Eastwood. That includes myself, however you could try Incident of the Buffalo Soldier, Incident of the Running Man. Two good episodes with Eastwood to the fore.

That is a great start, thank you :)

Incident at Alabaster Plain is also good, and it might also explain about the silver coiled rattlesnake seen on Clint's gun in several of his Spaghetti Westerns.

Might be a couple of years late here, but "Incident of the Day of the Dead" (Sept 16, 1959) is pretty good and ALL Rowdy -- even gets to say the "Head 'em up, Move 'em out!", maybe in honor of it being the opening episode of the second season. In a premise that's something like a "Twilight Zone" Rowdy gets tricked by a whole border town into working off a gambling debt for the local grandees played by Viveca Lindfors and Alexander Scourby. Not only interesting for the plot, which includes a Juarista uprising involving versatile character actors Ron Soble and Carlos Romero, the acting, setting, and its treatment -- But Clint shows about four times as many facial expressions, gestures and bodily attitudes as he does in the entire rest of his career.

I'm kinda new to Rawhide so I don't know how typical this is but I'm watching "Incident of the Garden of Eden" and it features a lot more "Clint" than the other few episodes that I've seen. There's also a scene where Clint wears nothing but a towel! Kinda racy for 1960.

I know your original post is pretty old but I wanted to chime in anyway.

I'm watching that too and I think this is up there with one of his best episodes. Really funny scene when the butler insists on helping him dress. (He's at an eccentric Englishman's home where they dress for dinner.) While he's bathing, the butler takes his clothes to wash them (letting him know he'll iron them). "What are you trying to do, get me thrown off the drive," he says.

They've laid out a tux and white tie, which is the only time I think I've seen Eastwood dressed up in this show.

Interesting mystery as to what's going on. Real twist in the plot about 40 minutes in.

Thanks for the swift reply! I fell asleep before the episode was over so I missed the twist. DANG!!

Anyway, thanks again and I'll do my best to chime in next weekend.
