Pilot Movie - corrected post

I had never seen the pilot movie, but I recently saw it on YouTube for the first time. It was pretty good. It was really interesting seeing all the characters at the very beginning and how their relationships with each other began, especially Ironside and Mark - things started off pretty rocky with between them. Mark was especially hostile at first. It's fascinating to seen, considering their relationship grew into such a strong and protective bond as the series went on.

Also, Ed and Eve were especially flirty and pretty touchy feely with one another. They were still a little flirty in the series, here and there, but they really scaled back on the amount of physical touching. It's interesting too that Ed seems a little hostile and not very trusting of mark at the beginning, which I guess makes sense given Mark's record at the time, while Mark and Eve seem to get on pretty well with each other off the bat.

I really liked the scene, later in the movie, when the Chief is about to give up and quit the force altogether after failing to catch a suspect because of his new physical limitations, which frustrates him greatly. He wakes Mark up in the middle of the night to tell him he's done a good job, as his assistant and in school, but that it's over. The Chief is done. Mark gives a very tough, but touching speech about how the Chief is quiting for both of them. That school's a drag, but he had to keep going as long as the Chief did, as long as he was working for him. But now if the Chief quits, he quits and they both go home. It's obviously something Mark doesn't want, but he's trying to make a point - and it works. The Chief doesn't quit, as we all know. It's a very touching scene.

The scene that follows that is pretty funny too. Mark sees the Chief struggling to shave himself and offers to help. The chief seems a little apprehensive at first, but agrees. As Mark is giving him a shave, Eve walks in and quips, "What's your blood type, Chief?". The rapport between the characters is already pretty good from jump, which is something the series excelled at.

I have to say, though, I wasn't a big fan of Ed here. He just seemed very uptight and humorless. Very boring. I do like him in the rest of the series, he certainly became more likable. But he's pretty stiff here.

Anyway, I really liked it. It really laid all the necessary groundwork for the series that followed. It's definitely worth checking out if you've never seen it before.

A very nice summary of the Pilot-I think Mark realized when he helped Ironside into bed just how much the Chief trusted him also-like he said you could have dropped me on my head.
Mark and The Chief's relationship did evolve into a father-son one.
Ed was also jealous of Mark-he didn't like Mark pushing past him to help The Chief off the porch
Ed and Eve were very flirty. There wasn't the same chemistry with Fran,
I liked that they toned down Ironside in the series.
I wish that Sister Agatha could have appeared more in the series also

Thanks! That's exactly it - Ed did seem a little jealous of Mark and his new position so close to the chief. It definitely felt as if he was still pretty distrusting of him. Ironside was in an incredibly vulnerable position with his new disability, and he was definitely putting a lot of trust into Mark to live with him, take care of him, drive him and be his all-around aid. And Mark definitely came through for him. He showed himself to be very trustworthy and hardworking. And I completely agree about the Father/Son type bond they developed over the series. It was one of the best parts of the series.

I, too, wish Sister Agatha had appeared more in the series. She seemed like a great character.

Mark and The Chief's relationship was very real in it's portrayal.
Mark wasn't a yes man and he wasn't a goody two shoes-In the first season Mark falls in with bad company and like any 'kid' he doesn't want to hear it.

I agree with everything you've stated here about Mark in the first season. He could be pretty hardheaded. He and the Chief really do butt heads in a few times. The episode "Memories of an Ice Cream Stick" really comes to mind. I think Mark really found out at the end of that episode that his old life, and the people from it, weren't really looking out for him. That it was the Chief and those he was working with who really cared about him. They had a few disagreements like that. But at the end of these disagreements, I do think Mark always saw that the Chief just had his best possible interest at heart. As much as Mark took care of the Chief, the Chief was taking care of him too. Keeping him out of trouble was top priority, and it wasn't always easy. But Ironside saw the potential in him, that he was worth the effort, and with his help, Mark really grew into a very smart, upstanding man, with a bright future. He really was just a kid in the first season.

Very well stated-it's nice to read other people's opinions of this great show.

I enjoy discussing this great show too! It's a lot of fun to talk to people who love it as much as I do!

Sister Agatha got to reappear in a two-parter, Split Second to an Epitaph but one more after that would've been decent.

The pilot is one of my favourites (episodes like "One Hour to Kill" and "Desperate Encounter" as well), like most TV pilots it has a different feel to the show at large but I like the camera work and first half where Ironside's legend is built up and his lunch with the Commissioner.

Yes I loved Sister Agatha-I just recently rewatched the pilot episode-I had forgotten how good it was.Of the series I liked One Hour to Kill and Happy Dreams of Hollow Men-I think the first four seasons were the best.

I totally agree that the first four seasons we're the best! I think everything just clicked really well with the show and characters from the very beginning, it was all there in the the pilot. Just great. I think there was very little that needed to be tweaked or changed from the pilot going into the rest of series. I agree that the camera work and editing were a bit different, but I liked it! But Of course, as the show went on, there were other subtle, but noticeable changes from the pilot: the characters appeared to grow more comfortable and trusting with one another, Ironside mellowed out a bit, Ed loosened up a little, and Mark matured gradually. All were very natural character progressions. But compared to other shows, quite a bit remained the same from the pilot. I really enjoyed it.
