I can't remember if he was ever brought to justice or if they ever discovered who hired him in the first place?

If you're referring to the pilot movie, the answer is "yes", and it wasn't a hiree, it was personal on the part of the shooter.

I've only ever seen the show in syndication and didn't know the person who shot him had ever been caught. Thanks.
