Where do you rank this as a Kubrick film?
I feel like this one is often overlooked. I don't think it's close to his best but still a solid 8/10. I'd rank it below these.
A Clockwork Orange
2001
Dr. Strangelove
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket
In my opinion it is one of, if not the most well shot film ever made, in regards to natural lighting and overall aesthetic beauty. And I agree that it is often overlooked. I would rate it as my third favorite Kubrick film.
2001
The Shining
Barry Lyndon
It's probably the most well shot film of all time. Almost every shot is symmetrical. There are a lot of great zoom in shots as well.
shareThe absolutely lowest for its .... "plot", shall we say.
I've considered to rewatch it just to see if maybe I missed something during first viewing, but oh boy, I can't.
And yes I know the aesthetics are brilliant. But that doesn't suffice.
I quite enjoyed the slow burning narrative and felt it worked well in complimenting the cinematography, Barry moving through his life like a candle light flickering in a dark room.
Starting out strong and bright but slowly winding down as the the candle stick melts.
I think it's better on a second viewing. I did enjoy it the first time, but that second time really blew me away. I'm very picky with period pieces as well.
share1) The Shining
2) A Clockwork Orange
3) Full Metal Jacket
4) 2001: A Space Odyssey
5) Dr. Strangelove
6) Eyes Wide Shut
7) The Killing
8) Barry Lyndon
9) Lolita
10) Paths of Glory
I agree with 9 and 10 being so low. I really don't understand the hype of Paths of Glory. It's a rather generic war film. I can't believe it's so high on IMDb's top 250 list.
shareIt's his best film.
shareFor me right now it's on the top.
