What happened to Zito?

Did the actor quit? Was he killed off?

Yes and yes, I believe (if I remember correctly). I believe John Diehl wanted to leave the show, but they kept it quiet until Zito was killed. The show was never the same without him, IMO...a really shocking death back then.

Thank you for the confirmation! I was thinking it was John Diehl's decision to leave, but wasn't 100% sure. Switek and Zito were such an underrated part of the show and such a great contrast to Crockett/Tubbs.

I always saw them as cartoons. I would not want them responding if I was in a crisis.

I know what you mean! 😃 However, based on what I've heard from police officers (who always said that "Barney Miller" was the most realistic cop show), you're probably more likely to get Switek and Zito than you are Crockett and Tubbs! 😃

Thanks for that. He is a very good character actor and the show did miss his presence.
