According to George Lucas, "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" introduces, and quickly kills off, Qui-Gon Jinn for one very specific reason.

Well, it also mirrors what happened with Obi Won in the first SW's film. The teacher dying in front of the srudent, the apprentice.

Surely that thought occurred to him as well.

The movie still sucks. He wanted to make jedi's vulnerable. Fine, but the movie is a mess and only picks up with the battle between the Jedi and Darth Maul.

Lucas should have left it all alone before the rerelease of the special editions of the original trilogy.
