Continuity issue - since Broom is in this one...

Is it safe to say this is a prequel to Hellboy 1 and the sword cartoon takes place between the two live action movies?

They have their own continuity. Not connected with the films. That's why Hellboy is public in this.

They are not in the same continuity as the films or the comic book. Have you noticed that Hellboy and Liz are just friends in theses cartoons?

The live-action films, the comic books and the animated features are all different "universes" with different continuities.

Similar to how you'd say The Mummy remake series was its own story and unrelated to the original series, for example.

The comics represent one universe. The films another unique universe. The animated movies yet another unique universe. And presumably the video game is its own universe, but I don't know, I didn't play it after hearing some bad things about the gameplay.

They used the actors from the live action movies because they are perfect for the characters, regardless what the continuity is.

Some of the easiest ways to tell they are in a different continuity are:

-Liz and Hellboy merely seem to be friends in the animated movies, whereas in the live action films, they are in a romantic relationship.
-There are characters that at this point are specific to the live action films and vice versa, specific to the animated films. (I said "at this point" because it's still possible for a third live action film to be made)

I can't blame you, though, I was confused when I first heard about the animated films, and thought they were meant to be a continuation of the live-action movies.
