So will this be a new Disney princess?

This movie isn’t getting a lot of buzz. Mine is the only post here so far. I accidentally ran into a twitter post about a preview that was shown to an audience that seems to suggest that this an animated musical with the protagonist being a princess. Anyone know?

reply

Yeah, I think the trailer dropped and people don't seem interested.

More belted sad-empowering-hopeful songs. Yippee.

reply

Just let it go.

Official bomb. Cost $200 million to make but only earned about $145 million after a month.

So much for celebrating 100 years of Disney.

Asha sounded like a commoner to me. And honestly, she's going to be forgotten as quickly as Raya from that last dragon movie, so chances are, she not only isn't a princess, she's not joining the Disney Princess franchise. They also still have not explained how or why she turned herself into an old white woman after becoming the fairy godmother from Cinderella.

reply

I think Asha being a commoner is irrelevant when you consider the Disney Princess qualifying rule of: bestowed high social status by royalty (like Mulan being bestowed with the honor being a member of the Emperor’s Council). Asha was bestowed with the honor of being both apprentice to King Magnífico and Fairy Godmother to the people of Rosas and Royal Aide to Queen Amaya.

I don’t think Asha is actually the future Fairy Godmother to Cinderella. The outfit is more of an Easter Egg only.

As for Raya vs Asha, the impact of both has yet to be seen. But Asha with her sing along songs is sure to be a hit on Disney+

reply

You mean the same Disney+ people keep cancelling their subscriptions to? The one that's been a big financial failure for the Walt Disney company?

Being an apprentice to the "bad guy" and the ruler of your kingdom isn't the same thing as becoming "royalty."

Keep in mind that hardly anyone actually went to see the film, both domestically or overseas, so it doesn't matter what role Asha plays; she will be forgotten and stuck in the same historical dustbin of Disney as all the other unpopular characters that starred in their box office bombs. Perhaps she can make friends with that koala voiced by William Shatner from "The Wild," the cows from "Home on the Range," or Brer Rabbit from "Song of the South" while she's in there, or perhaps Princess Eilonwy, or Frenwen the Pig from "The Black Cauldron."

Disney's not gonna be stupid enough to put an obscure character like her in their Princess franchise. They may be stupid about a lot of things, but they know she will do nothing to move merchandise, so all the more reason for her to end up in the Forgotten Disney Dustbin. Better buy those dollies of her while you can. Most of them are gonna end up at the dump.
