S3 Finale qustion (potential spoiler)

When Maeve shows up at the Boys' Flatiron Building HQ, it seemed like she quickly took the special Russian Gas and did she keep it or throw it out the window??

I thought the Boys were going to use it to kill Homelander---which Maeve also wanted to do. So why did she take away the one weapon they thought could do it??

reply

The gas was to take down Soldier Boy. Maeve threw it away because she was wanting Soldier Boy's help with killing Homelander. But then the kid got involved and plans went weird.

I thought Frenchie and the rest of the boys were trying to take out Homelander.....wasn't that their original goal?

Or they changed course once the learned SB had the crazy nuclear blast power?

reply

I think Homelander having Butcher's stepson there changed the whole dynamic.

In truth, it does not make much sense or hold up to close examination. The Boys have shown they are willing to risk not only their own lives but the lives of hundreds or more strangers unlucky enough to be nearby, to facilitate Soldier Boy killing Homelander. Maeve threw away the nerve gas because it's the only thing known to sedate Soldier Boy just so no one could stop him. Suddenly the kid shows up, and now The Boys, and Maeve, are willing to go to any lengths to save Homelander's life and sedate Soldier Boy. It's pretty nonsensical, and only serves to prolong the series.

Yeah but when Maeve showed up and threw the gas away, this was BEFORE she knew Ryan would be there. And at that point, I thought the whole point of them getting the gas was to kill Homelander. Isn't that why they had Frenchie figure out whatever was strong to enough to incapacitate SB would work on Homelander?

reply

The gas was for Soldier Boy. They knew it would work on him because the Russians used it on him.

They probably didn't know whether the gas would work on Homelander. Every supe is different, according to Frenchie in season one.

Maeve did what she did to eliminate any possibility that they'd take down Soldier Boy too soon.

And here's my take on the Ryan thing: it's one thing to risk the lives of adult bystanders who may be nearby, another thing entirely to risk killing a kid who's standing right there.

Besides, I really don't think Maeve DID have a change of heart at first. She initially shared a look with Butcher that I took to mean, "Don't give up on this now, just for the kid." And of course she went right after Homelander

All that said, we know Maeve still wants to do good, deep inside. It showed when she tried to save a couple kids from the hijacked plane.
