So, Castle's replacement has already been cancelled...

...and a petty part of me is glad. Take that, ABC!  Yes, I know another season of Castle would've most likely sucked with the PI business and Super Alexis, but with it being gone and relegated to the wee hours on TNT, it's been hard to go cold turkey. I was able to catch a few of the late night/early morning episodes when I was up with my baby, but he's sleeping through the night now so no middle of the night TV anymore for me (thank god!). I do miss it, though....our DVR is pretty much filled to capacity and I rarely buy DVDs anymore. 

They will regret cancelling Castle so I am glad the replacement show was canceled

reply

ABC might have regretted cancelling Castle, except with Katic not returning it was pretty much a foregone conclusion. With no Beckett the show would likely have tanked anyway. In the face of fan backlash, ABC wanted to cut their losses and go out on a higher note than with audience abandonment.

reply

I'm not so sure about that. I stopped watching about halfway through the last season and the only two episodes in it that I liked were the two where Beckett didn't show up.

Maybe they should make a series about Detective Slaughter, provided AB could handle both that and The Last Ship.

reply

Lots of folks said similar things about the Beckett-less episodes. But the group of you were a minority that couldn't cause the show to continue.

I guess a Slaughter spinoff could work, through its not likely to happen.

reply

I believe they were suppose to have a spinoff of Ryan and Esposito, but they canned that idea rather quickly.

If they continued into a ninth season without Beckett, ABC would be in a world of hurt with finances. Thank goodness they cut their losses and moved on.

I still think about it whenever I see Nathan Fillion have a recurring guest spot on Modern Family (2009). I guess I really wanted to see how Beckett would handle murder cases being a mother herself.

There was so much potential, but the writers fudged it up badly. This is what happens when you hire a bunch of new writers and they have no idea about the history of the characters.

Richard Castle would be ashamed.

reply

The showrunners did mess up the formula, but it seems to me Nathan Fillion is the main culprit here. He wanted to be the top dog and didn't want to share the limelight and success with Katic, so now he's king of nothing.

I wouldn't jump to see any more of his stuff.

reply

Not one bit of evidence to support this. Put up or STFU.

Really? Is that why Beckett's "Dead Mom" storyline basically took over the show and made it unwatchable for a while? Because Nathan Fillion wanted to be top dog on a show where he was playing the title character?

I disagree. Fillion wasn't the problem. Katic wasn't either, but I'm convinced she wanted out, and that's why the season was written the way it was. The showrunners had to get Beckett out of the way and they created the LokSat arc to get that done--someone to kill Beckett in the finale. "Seven years later" was added in the event of cancellation; to provide a semi-satisfactory conclusion for us remaining loyal fans. After almost a year, I've reconciled myself to the show's demise. I miss it all the time, but I understand most of the reasons it died.

reply

I stopped watching about half way through the last season also. I used to love the show but it just got boring the last season IMO.

reply

I doubt ABC is regretting anything. Castle's pricetag per episode was pretty big considering the ensemeble had been together 170+ episodes. That was a hefty price to pay for what amounts to 2mil more total viewers. It makes no financial sense whatsoever to continue the show.

This is probably what did it, not some fans bitching online. If anything, dropping Beckett and Lacey should have cut the costs a good bit, so it's likely we would have ended up with a Stana-less season, anyway. It was a last-ditch attempt to make the rising cast salaries balance with the sinking ratings, but it ultimately didn't pan out for the show.

If you'd asked me before last season if I wanted to see a Beckett-less season, I'd have said no, but after the hot mess they made of Stana barely being in this past season, I'd rather they'd promoted Beckett to DC and moved on. I *hated* that stupid Locksat plot.

I don't buy so many dvd's anymore, but if it's something I know I'll watch, and it's really cheap....my reasoning is usually something like: where else can I get so many hours of entertainment for so cheap? And if you go to Amazon or even places that sell used, or even the local library, you can usually find old seasons very reasonably priced (or, free from the library!)

I wouldn't suggest it, usually, but it can be almost therapeutic to have something you love to watch over and over again, especially when you have children. Sometimes I just can't focus on something new, and something old and well loved is like curling up with an old friend and s warm blanket. Easy, mindless entertainment.

I love doing this with books and movies too, readerf61!!!

OK, true confession: sometimes I have a vague feeling of sadness, and I'm not sure why. I just need a good cry. I reread certain books, or (more rarely) watch an old movie I just know is gonna make me sit there and cry like a baby. They never fail me, and it's very cathartic, I always feel better.

The end of Pay it Forward--book or movie--is always good for huge sobs. How embarrassing.

I cry every time at the end of To Kill A Mockingbird. And I'm a very old curmudgeon! My wife just shakes her head in exasperation.

reply

I so get that, reader. If you really want to be wrecked emotionally, watch the first 10 mins or so of "Up". It may be a children's movie, but the montage of the older couple's marriage paired with the music gets my waterworks going....Every. Single. Time.

Which show was to "replace" Castle?

"I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it." - Groucho Marx

reply

Conviction. It starred Hayley Atwell and only lasted 13 episodes.

reply

You are taking pleasure from this Conviction's cancellation and I am not sure why. It did not truly replace Castle!. Castle got canceled first THEN ABC decided to put Conviction in the same time slot.

Now if ABC was going to keep Castle then decided "Conviction" is a better show and decided to cancel Castle to make a spot in the monday lineup for Conviction then I could see your reaction. But that didn't happen.

reply

'Conviction' was such a hot mess, portraying a hot mess of characters and plotlines, that it was begging to be yanked. And poor Hayley Attwell, leaving Agent Carter which was somewhat entertaining for something more risky doesn't always pan out.

Am I glad Castle wasn't renewed? Yes and no. Nathan Fillion as the title character was becoming very, very boring. What I looked for was more screen time for Alexis and Hayley, with Javier and Kevin as backup.

The overarching plotline from this last season really stank. It took a lot of suspension of belief to accept the shadowy conspiracy as the means to keep Beckett and Castle apart. But by then I understand that Nathan and Stana were having such difficulty hiding their contempt for each other. However, professionally I didn't see it on screen - so some really great acting there.

And I agree that it is better for a show to leave on a high note than limp along into oblivion.

reply

I never read or heard anything to support the rumors that Fillion and Katic despised each other. I do believe that Katic felt the show had run its course and there was no room for Beckett to grow in the show's framework. She's also on record for wanting to go out on a high note--not on a drawn-out death of dwindling ratings. Because Katic wanted out, there was probably tension between them, at least at season's start. However, according to Forbes, they both earned $12M last year and that likely assuaged any bad feelings.

reply

Abc should not have cancelled Castle

reply

Never would have made it without Katic. ABC could've tried something else with Fillion, Huertas, and Dever perhaps. I guess they figured it wasn't worth the investment.

reply

If it had not been cancelled, Dever would not have been there. After Katic left, He was also let go along with Tamals Jones.

reply

TV shows get cancelled all the time, lately a lot of them right after the first season. It has nothing to do with Castle.

It was time to put Castle to bed anyways so I'm not celebrating anything.
