Nation Relieved To No Longer Have To Pretend To Like Soccer

U.S. — After the men's national team was dealt a crushing 1-3 loss by the Netherlands, the United States expressed deep relief to no longer have to go on pretending to like soccer.

"Hoo-boy, I didn't think I could keep that up another day," said local man Aaron Bronson. "Thank God for the Dutch!"

After twelve grueling days of trying to get excited about a ball mostly being passed backward, celebrations broke out across America as its World Cup run came to a close. "I know we only have to fake being soccer fans every four years, but it's been a brutal couple of weeks," said local bar owner Greg Jaster. "We scored three goals in SIX HOURS of soccer! And I have it on good authority from a Brazilian buddy of mine that our last goal was actually an accident. I'm trying to be a good patriot and cheer for our team, but come on."

According to people who watch soccer, the U.S. team actually looked better while losing during this World Cup. "The Americans really didn't get outplayed, they just made awful mistakes in all the big moments," said England native Sean O'Houlihan. "They created wide-open shots, and then completely whiffed. They would play excellent defense against the best strikers in the world - but then would totally forget to mark a mediocre player. It's really rather tragic."

At publishing time, no one had understood a word Mr. O'Houlihan had said and switched the channel over to real football.

It's always been amusing how desperately the media wants USA sports fans to like soccer. "After all," the reasoning goes, "It's the most popular sport in the world!" How dare large numbers of Americans refuse to obsess over something that's popular?

Soccer is a playground sport like basketball: it's fun to actually play, but a colossal bore to watch on TV.

It's funny how one's upbringing / locale can produce such bizarrely contrasting beliefs.

And I'm saying this as a football fan, so obviously have bias but I also find it amazing that this is a legitimate mindset. I mean, what are the American alternatives?

American football and baseball. How can one's brain be so conditioned to say that something so ingrained with stop / start moments be not a "colossal bore to watch on TV"?!!

Not that I'm seeking to change anyone's preferences, it's just a truly bizarre argument - "Yeah, American football stops every two seconds to go for adverts, etc but it's soooo much more watchable" 😂

It's basically brain washing. Most people love the sports they grew up watching as a child, talked about and played at school and watched with their family. In USA it’s their main four sports, most other nations prefer association football.

For many its harder to get into other spectator sports once you hit a certain age and have all your favourites and may be nerdy with facts, history, allegiances to favourite teams and fondness for favourite players.

The only thing I don’t get is the brainwashed need by Americans to bash football whenever they see it trending, it happens too on other sites with some Europeans bashing American Football, usually when the Super Bowl is on.

Brainwashed fans don’t like to see their favourite sports get challenged.

Maybe it's just a psychological reflexive thing based on their sports not being particularly popular world wide.

Like you said it's almost brain washing to like the things ingrained at an early age. Then when you get older, and gain something more of a world wide perspective, it must hurt pretty hard psychologically to discover what you've grown up on isn't universally loved or even bothered with at all.

"Real football", you mean the one you play with your hands?
And the one that is not even a real ball, right? More like an egg...

Yet you can score in soccer by getting it in the net with your head.

Now I can get back to watching curling...
