I want a poll of how many people on this board actually like Gabby... ??

Well? There is so much hate on this board that I want to see who actually likes her as a character (not talking about Monica!)

I personally love season 1 Gabby, liked season 2, and have been tolerating her ever since.

So, who likes/loves Gabby Dawson?

reply

Count me out! I can't even say that I dislike her. Now I just hate her!

reply

I bet about 99% of everyone here hate her...most people hate her on facebook too and just about every other forum I've been to...twitter seems to be the only place where she seems to have any significant following. Although Scabby fans seem to be still in the minority in general...but they're a very loud bunch on twitter apparently.

I followed Monica Raymund here from her old show, Lie To Me, since she was the only cast member I even knew when CF first came out. I guess I liked her well enough the first couple seasons, and all the characters had their good and bad sides.

But the writing for her has suffered since Shay was killed off. In their support for each other, they balanced each other. Gabby doesn't really have anyone who keeps her grounded anymore in the way Shay did. Even Casey just gets steamrolled by her will.

So I can't say that I really "like" Gabby anymore, but I don't "hate" her. Hate is a very raw emotion, which to me often says more about the hater than the subject of their hate. I just think far too much of the writing revolves around her right now.

I think there are many, many problems with the writing on CF in-general, to the point that I am seriously considering pulling the plug on it, only 5 years in. But it won't be because of her alone. Yes, Gabby's character deserves criticism, but she seems to get a disproportionate amount of "venom" around here.

Even the term "Scabby" has certain overtones that make me wonder where all the venom really comes from.

reply

Can not stand her...This is NOT the Gabby show.

 Peace is with Jesus

reply

Tolerated her first season, grew annoyed with her after that.

Now, I can't stand her.

To be clear, I'm talking Gabby the character. I know little about Monica Raymond, and if it's her (and the writers, producers) goal to have her be an extremely annoying person, she's doing a great acting job.

reply

I like her we'll enough.. Never liked her obsession with Matt and how I felt she treated peter.. But she wanted what she wanted can't totally blame that ...but the amount of hate she gets(from what seems to be mostly female posters ) is crazy she is the female lead and the emotional touchstone for the show.. And her character seems no more over the top then sleep around Kelly.. Or Mr perfect matt

reply

the problem with Scabby Dawson is that she just has too many flaws and dislikable aspects about her character which makes her much more annoying and unbearable compared to Severide and Casey.

And as much as I love Casey, he is not "perfect"...I honestly don't understand why some people would think he is...

reply

Because a lot of times he's portrayed as a Boy Scout to contrast Kelly's Wild Child ways. We all know he has a temper but it takes a lot for him to get riled up. And I like Gabby.

I don't think more electricity is what this guy really needs. Just throwin' it out there.

Gabby sucks. Since mid-season 2 when she suddenly got the urge to want to be a firefighter she has become insufferable. She's a Mary Sue character who gets EVERYTHING she wants. And everyone bends over backwards to give her EVERYTHING she wants. Anyone has a problem, let Gabby be the one of wisdom.

This show was at its best when it used its characters in an ensemble format, where no ONE character dominated every storyline. Since mid-season 2, the show has become dominated by the Gabby character, with all these storylines that are complete joke to the CFD, as well as her being inserted into other characters' storylines all the time.

I don't have a problem with her and don't understand all the venom. I like her better as a paramedic though, so I'm glad she's back to that.

reply

The reason for all the venom? She's become a Mary Sue character. Everybody bends over backwards to ensure she gets EVERYTHING she wants. She doesn't have to work for it.

She does her candidacy conveniently under the command of her boyfriend, which is expressly prohibited in all firehouses. Boden even told her that, and then relented to keep the house together.

She's a firefighter for a year, gets pregnant, and let's Severide use his connections to get her detailed to arson. Total BS. She's no arson investigator.

She feels she has a bond with a kid, and with no parenting experience, she becomes his foster mother over qualified foster families in just 2 weeks. Not even close to realistic. She has Antonio use his influence as a cop to speed up the background process. Matt uses his influence as an Alderman to get her an interview with Child Services. And despite having a home that was cleaned in less than a day and failed all kinds of safety requirements after she failed, at the last minute, to find another apartment, she gets approved. Complete BS. And of course, all of 51 helps clean out the place.

And Matt, who explained that they didn't have time to adopt a kid with them working full-time as firefighters and his Alderman job, chooses once again to come back to her. He is constantly bending over backwards for her, and she does nothing for him except demand.

And let's not forget how she's constantly included in other storylines. The Chief is under investigation and he calls his long-appointed Lieutenants, his oldest friends in Mouch and Hermann, and GABBY. And who plants the misguided idea that Riddle is setting Boden up, that sends him off half-cocked falsely accusing him? GABBY. When Hermann got stabbed, who was at his bed side more than his own wife or the Chief or Mouch? GABBY. When Trudy was nervous before her wedding to Mouch, guess who gave her advice? Not Burgess, who has worked under Trudy for years and knows her the best. It was GABBY. Severide, of all people, needs to know if OFI has looked at security footage in the last episode. Instead of contacting an actual experienced investigator, or his retired arson investigator dad, he asks GABBY, who is supposedly an arson expert after 3 weeks experience.

And once again, she's going to get her happy ending in the next episode where she hits a pedestrian and is getting sued. No suspension, no fine, no nothing because it's the Mary Sue, Gabby.

Who or what is Mary Sue? I've seen that reference before regarding Gabby.

reply

"A Mary Sue is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities."

reply

basically whatever Scabby Dawson wants, she gets, no matter how unrealistic it is.

reply

Please forgive my ignorance but, why do they call her Scabby anyway?

reply

"they" don't call her Scabby....only that one poster does. And as much as I dislike Gabby myself I find that pretty juvenile.

reply

Amen!

I'm realizing why I don't come to IMDb as much as I used to. These boards have been hijacked by whining, puerile twits, and it's really a bore. If you don't like the character of Gabby, fine. We get it. We long ago bought the f'ing t-shirt, wore it out and tossed it. Some of us have no problem with Dawson's character. As to this idiotic "Mary Sue" BS, I've really heard more than enough of it. The same nonsense haunts the Criminal Minds board about JJ. Those of you who keep posting this crap sound like broken records. Grow up and shut up. If a character on a show bothers you that much, then it is time to stop watching.

Dawson's character is far from "perfect" and "getting everything she wants." She is just as flawed as every other human, and I would hardly say she always gets what she wants. Do you think she wanted to suffer a miscarriage? Did she want to have Louie's real father show up, just as she finally had the family she wanted? Dawson and Casey love Louie and would make good parents for him. The kid is finally starting to feel safe and loved, then this father shows up. They realize they must let the father meet Louie, only to have him bail out on the meeting. They're facing one of the toughest challenges of their lives, so I don't see how Dawson is still that Mary Sue type some of you morons keep blabbing about. Many of you need to take a page from the Talking Heads song, Psycho Killers: "You're talkin' a lot, but you're not sayin' anything..../Say something once, why say it again?"

Excuse me, with all due respect but that doesn't answer my question. I'm not american, it may be obvious for someone born and raised in the US, but not for me. I'd really like to know where the "Scabby" came from, Thanks.

reply

It sounds like Gabby with an S in front... To me it's because she is a festering scab on the show that needs to be lanced. A scab is what happens when a wound starts healing.

reply

I call her Scabby because it describes her character perfectly.

reply

excuse me but I am certainly not the only person who calls her "Scabby"...I started calling her that after some of the other haters started calling her that here. So get your facts right.

reply

It's a coping mechanism.

reply

Excellent post. I hadn't thought about it in that detail, but you're spot on right.

reply

I started watching this show in the middle of season 4. So I hadn't seen any of Gabby's behaviour before that. So when I came to this board a few weeks ago and saw how many people hated the character, I couldn't believe it. She was one of my favorites!

Now I'm catching up on the older seasons and I'm into season 3 and I can absolutely see why people would not like her character. I'm at the part where she broke up with Matt after he reprimanded her (like he would have any other firefighter under his watch, especially a candidate). Wow.

The Mary Sue definition is perfect for her. And it's too bad. She started out as a great character. I wish she had stayed on ambo as the firefighter angle was when she started to go south.

reply

I also do not hate Gabby but I do now dislike the character. I have found it extremely irritating how she gets shoe-horned into every story line over the past couple seasons. You definitely don't see the same thing happening with Casey or Severide even though they are the male leads. I also didn't find it as bad while Shay was on the show. Gabby wasn't in every story line at that point and Shay seemed to temper some of Gabby's more annoying traits.
