She had no idea Nick was crazy rich ?!?!?

So they had been together for how long ? A year or so ? And he never wore any clothes to give her a clue ? They never ate at a restaurant with a huge bill ? He never had any conversations with anybody in front of her which could have possibly tipped her off ?

And she had a friend who lived near his family to whom she never mentioned the name of her boyfriend who knew his family were basically the biggest developers in SE Asia and “like royalty“.

I can believe that Nick would keep it quiet, and enjoy the feeling of being loved for himself and not his money.

I can also believe that the thousands of other women who were after him, would all agree to never tell Rachel!

Not all wealthy people flaunt their wealth.

reply

Yha, that’s what I meant. I meant all wealthy people flaunt it and therefore it would be easy for her to see it.

reply

All wealthy people don't flaunt it. In fact, most of the people flaunting wealth are faking it, and acting rich to assuage their insecurities. Recently rich people, especially those who didn't earn their wealth through hard work, do flaunt it, and typically lose it over time. The majority of truly wealthy people wear inexpensive clothing, drive inexpensive cars, and have inexpensive tastes in food.

reply

A person who doesn't flaunt their wealth, always has the option of flaunting it if and when they choose.

For all we know, Nick was enjoying playing at being a regular Joe when with Rachel, and chuckling to himself whenever she picked up a check, and then he'd go to parties with his rich Singaporean friends, where he'd get the Maserati out of the garage, and wear his good hand-tailored suits with the platinum-and-alexandrite cufflinks.

Other people recognized Nick and knew his family background. Certainly Rachel would have found out some how.

Being intimate with Nick for a whole year you would think Rachel would have some contact with some of Nick's family and friends in Singapore. Perhaps have talked briefly on the phone with his mom. Amazing they knew nothing of her and vice versa.

Let's remember that Nick was an only child so when he says he always thought of it as "their wealth" and not his that is bullshit. Why would he want all of his family's success to benefit others and not him?

reply

I've never seen the film, and was only commenting that one can't always identify a person's wealth by how they look or act.

True story: years ago, when I was in college, one of the wealthiest, if not the wealthiest, men in Berkeley, California was a homeless guy who was hit by a city bus. He used his settlement check to buy a building half a block from the UC Berkeley campus after having a dream in which the Russian mystic Rasputin appeared to him, holding up a record while saying "dooo it, dooo it!" In 1971 he opened Rasputin's Records in the building, which grew to be a multi-store chain all over the Bay Area. The dreams didn't stop, and one night he realized it wasn't a record Rasputin was holding, but a pizza. He opened Blondie's Pizza in another building he owned just adjacent to campus, and the dreams stopped. He eventually bought many other buildings, and opened many other businesses, all wildly profitable. You'd often see him wandering the streets, still dressed like a bum, muttering to himself, and you'd never know he was worth millions.

As I remember he died from slow clap.

The book makes it plain that Nick was staying away from his very dominating mother. Eleanor of the book was far worse than in the film and never had any redemption at all until farther along in the book series. Even then her attitude was complete BS. She was simply a monster.

That is why Nick was keeping his distance. And as film viewers know, Nicks relationship with Rachel was outed by "Radio One Asia" at the beginning of the film and Eleanor found out what Nick was hiding soon after.
