A Review

Uniting the director of "The Mitchells vs. the Machines," the writers of "Detective Pikachu," and the creative duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is loads of fun. An always moving, very bawdy, and sometimes gross action comedy with lots of spirit. The drawing style is peculiar but interesting, and while the characters aren't especially deep or complex, they are likable and very easy to relate to. The jokes are very funny and cut it pretty close for a PG rated movie. There was quite a few moments where I thought, "Did they really just say that in a kids film?"

One fault I found with the writing was the two separate villain storylines. One with a revenge-hungry, scene-stealing mutant fly voiced by Ice Cube, the other involving a stereotypical mad scientist played by Maya Rudolph. These two plotlines never fully converge. In fact, the latter one just gets suddenly dropped before the movie even enter its final act. I get that it's saving a place for a potential sequel to work off of, but I wish movies would try to be more self-contained more often. Finish this candy bar before you open another.

While I'm no expert on the Ninja Turtles, my friend who I saw it with is a big fan and he enjoyed this movie as much as I did. From what he told me it does deviate a bit from traditional TMNT lore, but not so much it feels bastardized. There's no denying this is a labor of love. Whether you're a die hard TMNT fan or a normie like me, "Mutant Mayhem" should please just about anyone with its irreverent humor, unique animation style, and almost nonstop action.

The characters are "likable and easy to relate to"? Not at all to me. Maybe for you... I hated the "characters" if you can call them that.

Oh, and you don't care about Ninja Turtles, you're not a fan, you don't know anything about the lore, so of course you liked the film. It's got nothing to do with the orignial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles whatsoever, so it's made for people like you.

The general audience. People who couldn't tell Leonardo from Raphael or Donotello. They rely on your absolute lack of knowledge of the TMNT, so that you can consume this disposable, forgettable entertainment without the slightest eye for criticism. This is NOT a 'labor of love' in any sense, it is a cash cow, a cash grab, only it's an empty shell of a movie. Pun intended.

This is a hollow shell of this movie with no plot and terrible CGI.

If they were going for a comic book look, they utterly failed; it looks like it was made with crayons

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion.

Yes, you are probably right that I don't fully understand the significance of what they changed from classic lore, but I hardly think it's as heartless as you claim. That this was just a cash grab. It's become commonplace now for fanbases to collectively rage against new incarnations of old properties which I think is warrented sometimes, but not here.

I also think your claim that "Mutant Mayhem" has no plot is ridiculous. Things happen that influence characters' actions. Characters change by the end because of the experience over the course of the story. And the crayon sketch-like visuals are the supposed to look like that. I thought they looked good. Better than the cheap looking puppet effects of the live-action movies from the 90s.

In the end Time will tell what is the best TMNT film, nothing any of us say here will matter.

Great review and agreed. I’m a massive Turtles fan and I find Mutant Mayhem to be a very entertaining and hilarious film.

I’d also love for Paramount to have a go at a live action Ninja Turtles film again as well. Those Michael Bay produced films were just so mediocre and forgettable and it’s a shame we haven’t had a good live action Turtles film since Secret of the Ooze.
