I have to disagree about Dafne Keen, I believe she is a talented actress. She may not be the perfect choice to play Lyra, but I believe she is playing the part well. As the series progresses and she becomes more familiar with the role, maybe Dafne will evolve into the Lyra that you’re hoping to see.
I’m really enjoying the show so far and Mrs Coulter is definitely one of my favorite characters. Mrs Colter is so evil, but Ruth Wilson makes her likable in a sinister kind of way.
Very good explanation! I’m midway through the first book, and I love it so far. I’m trying to pace myself with the book while the show progresses.
I agree I don’t believe Hopper ever intended to express the content of his letter, I believe over the course of writing it he realized his jealousy towards Mike. The story tells us that Hopper loves El very much, but almost to the point of being possessive of her, which to me made the contents of the letter seem less sincere.
I was very disappointed with the story arc between Hopper and El this season. I was hoping to see more bonding moments between the two and not just teenage rebellion. Hopper mentions these moments in his letter, but we really didn’t see it portrayed on the screen.
For me the letter at the end was the result of lazy writing and trying to bring in too many new characters that in my opinion added nothing to the overall story. Hopefully the writers will rebound and bring back the magic from Season 1
In a sense the name El was given to her by Mike, quite possibly the first person to show her kindness. When asked she refers to herself as El, the name that she chose of her own free will. Knowing her real birth name, I would say that she prefers El to Jane.
Yeah I’m confident that we’ll see Papa again. No! El isn’t the timid little girl that she once was, but she is still quite young. I believe that she can still be easily influenced by Papa’s manipulation if they happen to meet in her weakened condition. Not sure how Brenner really feels about Eleven or if he considers her his daughter at all. I do believe that his manipulation of her will always be top priority. One would have to think that sooner or later, El’s revenge will come to pass.
With El losing her powers, I believe this is going to have a huge impact on her mental state. Depression among fear and anger will surely rule her emotions as she tries to regain this vital part of her being. Symptoms of insanity might also play a part the longer time goes on. There may be only one person that can help her and again it will cost El her freedom.
I think Alita’s eyes actually had the opposite effect to uncanny valley with the audience. For me the large eyes made the character more relatable through her emotions and easier to accept Alita as being human.
I don’t think I would describe Alita as being overpowered even though she possesses super human abilities. Throughout the story we are constantly being reminded of her humanity. Her dependency on others could be considered a weakness which is not a bad thing. I agree this is a very good film, Alita is an amazing character.
Since Alita is portrayed as being human with her emotions intact I found the character relatable, despite her appearance, so the human element matters at least for some of us. The term “uncanny valley” doesn’t apply here from my view, if the character was void of emotions maybe I would see things differently. Emotions or not I didn’t see the character as being creepy instead quite the opposite. I think its amazing what the filmmakers have achieved in bringing Alita to life. I do recognize however that “uncanny valley” is a subjective term, but I think Alita looks great.
Alita is a human brain inside a cyborg body. Since the human element is there, that makes the character very relatable. There are many examples of humanity in Alita’s story. Her self discovery of who she is and who she will become is all there.
