My 80's themed birthday party is next weekend, and I'd like to project movies from the decade on the wall. The picture quality doesn't need to be that great, and I don't even need sound. I just need it to set the atmosphere. Any ideas on how I can do this cheaply?

borrow a projector from the office and pay the area of the wall you'll be projecting on a matte flat grey

sharejust been to the cinema, and you're right, though I'm not quite sure why it works.
shareit's because a neutral gray keeps your eye from overly focusing on one color while the silver is reflective and lets all the color bounce back to you that way you don't lose out on much of the image.
you'll notice that when you project onto white everything washes out and when you project onto black you don't see much of anything.
a simple way to test it is find a colorful image that's not as big as your desktop and make it your wallpaper (but don't stretch or tile it). example: if your desktop is 1280x1024 you might want to find a image that's about 800x600.
After you've made that image your wallpaper, change the background to blue and notice what colors stand out in the image, then change it to red, green, yellow and whatever else you're in the mood for. you'll notice that your eyes will pick up on whatever color your desktop is in the image.
