Has Private Messaging been added?

I haven't seen it. I don't want to miss it when it happens.

reply

Not that I'm aware of, but it will happen eventually :)

Why would people want to privately message each other anyway? Out of curiosity...

Perhaps someone asked you exactly where you live or exactly where you work. You don't mind telling them but you probably don't want it on the boards for all to see.

If you want to have more conversations and develop online friendships, it's a useful feature. Of course, you can do it on the boards, but private messages make it more personal. Not saying people should try to date on here, though, that's just weird.

I recently had to ask one of the posters something about the placement of the posts. I really needed PM back then (a few days ago) but had to do it in public instead.

Ok troll

Just as carry over for conversations. Like others have said, it's a nice tool to be able to ask a question, get to know someone more, and even helps to not clog up the board with excess talk (not that I necessarily mind those, but sometimes people just go off & it can be better suited for a PM).

I've had many instances here already where I was just like, "uh, if only I could PM this right now!" So, I definitely hope it's a feature that's around the bend. It's one of the first things I check for when logging on. Fingers crossed it's here soon!

Speaking for myself, when IMDB was getting ready to go away for good, I wanted to get the message out to many of my fellow forum members about this site, as well as a few other sites. However, there were certain members that I would not want to see show up here, even though there would really be no way of stopping it if they so chose.

In another instance, one member started his own facebook page on a topic, and invited everyone on that board to join. I PM'ed him and warned him that there were at least two of the nastiest trolls at IMDB on that board that he would not want as part of his group. For obvious reasons, I did not want to state this on the mainboards.

So it definitely has its place.

I actually would not want to see this feature added, at least not for the first few months of this growing website and I will tell you why.

IMDb had problems with retaining people on message boards and that was mainly because there was little incentive to go to those message boards. One person had a question about a movie/show? They would go and comment. The only people that would really see it thereafter were people who may have come across it when they say that show/movie. This could have been months and years after. The only people that would probably come back, after a post was responded to, were people who were directly replied to. Apart from that, one could have a totally new question, years into the future, and slowly that message board would die down because of this. I would want to see this site show every reply to a certain thread. This would solve that problem.

Now with private messaging, it may harm the site even more. Private messaging, in itself, is not bad; however, it would take away from people replying on threads. Think about it. If you were to ask someone about personal things, not wanting to be publicly posted; you could just ask them about things that you would ask them on a thread as well. Sooner or later, you are not going to want to go back to the message boards or a given thread, because you could just write to them through private message.

This is what I would find would be a dilemma.
