"Get Out" is up for best comedy or musical in the Golden Globes. Yes. Comedy.

First reaction:
Musical? What ? I don't remember any song and dance numbers!
It's just a horror movie, straight up horror movie. But there was a small amount of comic relief and so it gets shoved into the comedy and musical category. I don't think that putting it in the wrong category is necessarily racist though because remember they did the same thing to 'The Martian' and everyone was scratching their heads about that too. That was not anything resembling a comedy but it was in that category.

I think the categories of the golden globes are just kid of arbitrary and outdated. Lots of movies and TV shows don't fit so neatly into a box, although this one does fit into a box and that box is called HORROR.
But Horror as a genre has been the red headed stepchild of the film industry so it's rare that a true horror movie gets any award.

I guess the Oscars make it simpler because they just put everything in one box, but the Golden Globes at least allows double the amount of trophies. Same with the actor and actress awards- there are twice as many because of the categories.

Which system do you prefer?
Categories that may or may not make any sense, or just one big inclusive bucket?

reply

Really good movie...i enjoyed it a lot...
But this makes no sense.
This is a good example of why awards shows are pretty dumb...even though millions of us watch the stupid things...

reply

I've always considered the Golden Globes to be The CW of entertainment award ceremonies--a wannabe--so I'll pick the Academy's approach. They make many terrible choices, but their protocol is much easier for the public to understand.

Comedy my ass! That's just stupid.

There were some funny scenes, mostly the protagonist's friend, but that was such a small part of the movie and the rest was genuinely scary. It's a real head scratcher as to why they focused on the very small % of comedy content and call the movie a comedy. I wonder if they slept through the rest of the movie?

reply

Yes, there were some funny bits, and one could consider the parts about the black sex slaves for old white folks, and near-death white people being so desperate to live that they are willing to become black wryly satiric and droll; but the weight of the film is horrible, not funny, droll or riseable. It does not deserve to be in the Comedy or Musical category any more than does Night of the Living Dead. The GG awards do not have a Horror category, and I suspect they want this to win an award so the GG can make a political point, and that resulted in this decision.

I do not care what foreign journalists think. Speaking as a former journalist for a major city daily paper, I don't care what any alleged journalist thinks, any more.

reply

I never take the GG seriously and I doubt Get Out will garner any Oscar noms

reply

The Globes are the WORST...but i still enjoy watching the stars anyway
And yeah, Get Lost was really fun stuff... But no Oscar in the forecast...

reply

I'm not ragging on you, but taking the opportunity to say how I used to enjoy Awards Shows, but now all I see are self-satisfied rich people smugly wearing outrageously expensive clothes, expecting the rest of us to eat it all up.
I mean, I l might like Emma Stone (or Emma Thompson for that matter, or that movie Gwynnie was in), but I don't want lap at the trough of all-things Hollywood. It's nauseating, ... at least to me.

reply

It is pretty ridiculous stuff...but once or twice a year i enjoy the spectacle

reply

Well..."it" would be nominated for oscars.

reply

Hi croft - I disagree 'It' will not be nominated for an Oscar.

reply

maybe for visual effects or something but not one of the 'important' oscars.

reply

There's a tv show on HBO...i think it's called "on set"...i watched the other day and it said that "it" would be nominated...maybe i get it wrong, though.

reply

It's very much a comedy

reply

"It" has to be a comedy, nobody could take that stupid movie seriously.
