Whats the last cheap movie you took a chance and purchased but it turned out to be a decent movie?

I sometimes buy cheap movies from Dollar Tree and have been pleasantly surprised from time to time when they are good movies (worth way more than the dollar I spent on them).

The most recent dollar movie I enjoyed was Surviving the Wild starring Jon Voight and Aiden Cullen. https://moviechat.org/tt6212378/Surviving-the-Wild
It was a good coming of age story and survival movie. Kid wanted to take his grandpas ashes to a hiking summit they were suppose to explore together but his grandpa passed away before they went. Beautiful Kentucky scenery!

Last year I watched a zombie movie that I really enjoyed called Daylights End https://moviechat.org/tt3007132/Daylights-End
It was a good movie for being one dollar, and the supporting cast all had enough personality to keep it moving. It was no Dawn of the Dead, but worth a watch if you like zombie genre.

So whats a cheap movie you took a chance on and ended up liking more than you thought?

I don't buy movies. I don't believe in paying for media and art in general. I am an anti-capitalist. I believe in supporting artists directly with donations and/or have the government fund artists.
I consume media by sailing the high seas and have lived a pirate's life since the mid 80's. Over the last 40 years I have developed many different ways of navigating the seas. It has been an exciting adventure.
A pirates life is the only life for me. Aaaarrrrgh! ☠️

SO...YOU ARE A THIEF....AT LEAST SAY THE WORD.

I'm a pirate! AAAARRRRGGHH! ☠️

THAT'S NICE...I'M A THIEF.

You are?

reply

NOT ANYMORE...BUT KIND OF ALWAYS TOO...I WENT STRAIGHT WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN.

Were you a thief or a pirate? There is a difference.
If you were a thief, then I understand why you'd want to retire once you have a child. The game is for people who are willing to take high risks, and those kinds of risks are not worth it when you have a family since your actions affect them and not just you.
However, if you were a pirate, then I think the risk is worth it, even with a family.
So come back, it's great out here. There is nothing like being on the open seas and chasing a bounty. There are so many places you can sail to, and discover many wonderful treasures. Chests filled with gold. So much gold that you need a lot of storage space on your ship.

I've never bought a movie that I didn't already know I wanted due to already having seen it.

I rented a lot of "unknown quantity" type movies way back when though. The only one that stands out in my mind as one that I particularly liked is Cohen & Tate (1988), which I randomly rented (had never even heard of it, let alone seen it) in 1991 or so. When DVDs became popular in the early/mid 2000s, I looked for it on DVD but it didn't exist, so I bought it on VHS. Eventually it was released on DVD and even Blu-ray. I bought the Blu-ray, new/sealed, off eBay in 2017 for $13 + $3 shipping.

Hey, Good Deal! There are a few shows that im surprised has never gotten a DVD release as well as some movies. Im sure its the company that owns them, but wouldnt they get some kind of money buy creating DVDs for some of these older shows?

Witchery (1988) Also known as “la Casa 4” is a late 80s Italian witch / demonic possession b grade film that I bough blind. Needless to say you can’t go wrong with Italian direction, David Hasslehoff and Linda Blair.

I buy a good many dvds and Blu-rays without having seen the films first, but based only on genre, director or actors.

I’ve bought several of Camille Keaton’s Italian films without having seen them first recently, and I have enjoyed them all.

I used to only buy movies I had seen beforehand, but it became hum drum for me, I wanted some excitement with my movie viewing so I began buying them unseen. But I also looked for ones with actors I liked as some kind of guide if Ill like it. I bought Girl Fight https://moviechat.org/tt0210075/Girlfight only because Michelle Rodriguez was in it and I liked the story premise. But sometimes the story premise alone is enough to get me invested enough to try it out an unseen movie.

I dont think I have seen any Italian movies, but your choice in movie is one I wouldve made! I liked David Hasselhoff. Was he the priest in the movie?

reply

No, he was a photographer. Hasslehoff and his virgin wife were investigating an old hotel on an island when a group of others become stuck there during a storm. He was constantly trying to change his wife’s virginal status before the carnage started, and it’s a pretty fun and cheesy movie.

That does sound pretty funny and interesting. "Hell of a Honeymoon" should have been the tagline

MY DAUGHTER AND I WATCH THE DOLLAR TREES...DAYLIGHT'S END WAS PRETTY DARN GOOD...WE RECENTLY PICKED UP 8 OR 9 SHUDDER RELEASES AT DOLLAR TREE...THEY WERE ALL GOOD.

Awesome, Im glad im not the only one who liked the movie. It was much better than I thought it would be! I like that Dollar Tree gets blurays in as well. I dont know if this is considered a find at dollar tree, but I bought Assassination Nation https://moviechat.org/tt6205872/Assassination-Nation based on the premise alone as I watched Mean Girls years ago and really liked it. So this film should be good, its tagline on the cover is "Its Mean Girls meets The Purge"! I havent watched it yet though, Im waiting to see it with my Fiance. It keeps getting pushed to the back burner as we are watching several shows at the moment. Man in the High Castle being our newest show to watch
