I give up

19 weeks in. We've watched one movie every week in theaters. The current average score is 2.08/5. The good movies aren't really that good and the bad movies usually have idiots saying they're great when the reality, the average audience member suffers from bad movie big budget series stolckholm syndrome.

It's not worth continuing. Movies in theaters tend to suck. I'm looking at the upcoming releases and I have no interest in, Furiosa, IF, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the Strangers part 1, the Crow, Alien: Romulus, Bad Boys again, Wicked, or anything else. I'll keep up with the movie Club, but that's it.

reply

WELCOME...I SHOULD BE THE THEATERS BIGGEST SUPPORTER...BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN SINCE ENDGAME...EVEN THE THINGS I WANT TO SEE OR END UP ENJOYING DON'T FEEL LIKE THEY ARE WORTH A THEATER VISIT...MOST OF THE STUFF I LIKE BEST DOESN'T EVEN HIT THEATERS ANYMORE...WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS...GOTG/DEADPOOL.

reply

ALSO...YOU PUT IN THE EFFORT AND MONEY AND TIME TO GO THE THEATER...YOU ARE SETTING EXPECTATIONS FAIRLY HIGH FOR WHAT IS BEING PLAYED FOR THE MOST PART THESE DAYS.

LOW EFFORT...LOW EXPECTATIONS....HIGHER REWARDS

YAY STREAMING.🫤

reply

I hate streaming more and more.

It's actually getting worse than satellite and cable price gouging crap we experienced before Netflix.

If it wasn't for Movie Club, I would have gotten rid of my TV's and theater setup.

reply

I AM SURE I SPEAK FOR EVERYONE WHEN I SAY....THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE TV'S...YOU ARE AWESOME AND WE NEED YOU.

reply

I think it's why so many people do give up.

I wish more would try older movies from the 60/70s (or before), but not necessarily the "classics" but something you think you'd enjoy before going into it. I'd be happy to give recommendations. YouTube alone has a lot of great movies available.

reply

The worst part is, I purchase 60's- 80's classic flicks on DVD. Seeing them on streaming just makes streaming less interesting.

reply

YES!....STREAMING FILMS CHEAPENS THEM...I FINISH WATCHING SOMETHING AND IT FEELS LESSER THAN WHEN I WATCH A PHYSICAL MEDIA COPY.

reply

They sometimes have those classics in theaters, art-house cinemas, etc..

Out of curiosity, what are your favorite movies?

reply

Horror- Hereditary
Western - high plains Drifter
Sci Fi- Delecetessen
Romance- Ameli
Quirky- moonrise Kingdom or Grand Budapest Hotel
Drama- falling Down
Mystety- mystic River
80's Horror comedy- Monster Squad
90's comedy- Groundhog Day
80's Comedy- Trains Planes and Automobiles
70's crime- Deathwish

reply

If you like "Falling Down", check out "Joe" (director who made Rocky) and "Taxi Driver"

reply

I've seen Joe.

Taxi Driver with Deniro or the S. Korean taxi driver? I own that one.

reply

I meant the one with De Niro.. What did you think of "Joe"? I mentioned it, because it seemed to have started that kind of movie in 1970 (even though there weren't many after).. I liked the first half, but when the old geezers started to like the "hippie lifestyle" it got kinda silly. 7/10

reply

I don't remember Joe.

Taxi Driver was fine. Scorsese gets great performances but I don't care for his film structures.

The Korean one is brilliant.

reply

I don't like Scorsese but did like Paul Schrader's script and De Niro's acting.

Never saw the Korean one.

reply

Well, the movie business people can't say you didn't try.

Now you use that time to watch movies people here recommend.

I recommend El Bar from 2017 - it's subtitled.

reply

Excellent director. The Fepect Crime is a favorite of mine.

reply

Spains film industry has been on fire since the 2010s and is really putting Hollywood to shame.

I've somehow never seen 'El Bar', but I will fix that this week.

reply

Spain is good, but we don't get much here. I enjoy French movies even more but getting access is a real pain in the rear.

reply

I though what you were doing was really cool, but I totally get it. I almost never go to theaters anymore, either, even though it used to be a weekly ritual for me.

My bro still has an AMC pass or whatever that is now, and he almost never uses it and is about to cancel it.

We were redoing our budget this morning and organizing legal, financial, and tax paperwork. My wife did some research into our service cards (store cards, credit, etc...) and found many are now offering perks. About 20 minutes of research into the business and the shopping trends and we noticed a steep decline in purchasing which is causing a lot of "points, credits, benefits, etc..." being used to draw people in.

It was a really interesting view. Are the costs driving a reduction in engagement and increase in isolation spending habits or is isolated spending habits causing a reduction in purchasing? It's a fun question.

reply

Over the past few years I've been enjoying new films and TV shows less and less. Sometimes I'm convinced that the quality has dropped massively since Covid. But then I see excellent reviews and high ratings for productions that bored me and think that perhaps it's me that's changed.

reply

I think it’s quite possible that you haven’t changed, but the types of movies you’re watching have.

reply

You actually scared me for a second there bud. Glad you’re sticking with us and our crazy eclectic variety of films.

reply

I enjoy seeing the movies selected. It gets me out of my comfort zone while adding the enjoyment or disappointment with a good group of friends.
