Cheating Chandler

What a terrible idea. Even worse than the Rachel/Joey pairing.

Glad to hear that Matthew Perry nixed that scene!

Thank God he made them cancel. Horrible plot.

I still hate when they create some hot coworker for Rachel (Mark or something) and made Ross be jealous of him which lead to fight and then break up with Rachel If I remember it correctly. Chandler casually cheating on Monica would be even worse.

Rachel/Joey pairing was freaking horrible. Everyone hates it and it should have never be created.

reply

Th actors weren't a fan of the pairing either. It's a shame they didn't intervene like Perry.

reply

It was so awkward. As if they were sister and brother.

Which is interesting since public did accept Monica - Chandler pairing. And it was very risky move. Probably because at first they played it for comedy. And then as it was progressing for serious tone people were kinda happy for Chandler because he was always portrayed as loser in ladies department, like ugly, unsexy. Specially next to Joey who was pretty and could land anyone. People kinda felt sorry for Chandler for being that "ugly unpopular loser of the company" that every friend circle usually has. And then he landed hot chick like Monica who liked him and found him sexy and no one hated it.

While with Joey-Rachel it always felt she they were cheating on Ross. Like it was betrayal since everyone knew how Rachel is love of life for Ross. People were offended on Ross's behalf. And people hated that they have to now hate Joey because everyone loved Joey. So everyone just waited for that horrible plot to just end.

And really someone should have had talk to writers and producers when they pushed it.

The only time Rachel ever wanted Ross was when he was unavailable.

reply

True dat. She resented him and was bored while they were together. Then as soon as he founds himself new woman - she suddenly wants him .

reply

She could've did so much better than Ross

reply

Looks wise yeah but he was a Phd. He’s not hideous or anything. His biggest issue was he was insecure but she pushed him to be.

And she’s a waitress/executive assistant.

He should’ve gone for the black scientist. She’s gorgeous and they had stuff in common.

Oh and they were on a break. Lol

It's the most vile dumb ass sitcom idea i've ever heard. I can't believe it even got as far as did. ESPECIALLY after what he went through dating Kathy. It's an interesting little factoid though. As great as the show is, they were definitely just making stuff up without a great deal of design or planning. This ain't no Tolkien work of grand fiction.

Wasn't there an abandoned subplot of Kramer being a cannibal on Seinfeld? That idea may have been worse.

reply

I've never seen the episode, but apparently it wasn't abandoned -- it's called "The Butter Shave," and you should be able to find a bunch of threads relating to it (or create your own) on the Seinfeld discussion page: https://moviechat.org/tt0098904/Seinfeld

Quite true. They had a show to get out once a week, and you don't always have brilliant ideas on a regular schedule.

reply

The famously divisive idea what Rachel and Joey seeing if there was any chemistry there. I always thought that was very organic but it's a Red Button for other fans.

If I've seen those episodes, it's been years, but we're currently watching straight through on the DVDs. When we get there, I'll let you know what I think, over on the "Rachel & Joey" thread: https://moviechat.org/tt0108778/Friends/58c76e4593cef4080d771eab/Rachel-and-Joey
