His apartment looks like shit.

It's small and lifeless.
My closet looks bigger and happier than that.

I think that is the real reason for everything that happens in the movie:
his home (and life) is strangling him.
He needs to breathe some freedom.

But his house, being his biggest problem, is the first one that HAS to go.
