The reason why it's hard to find is probably because it is widely regarded as political incorect, or even racist. The reason is simple: it's first edition (in French) came out in 1931, when the Belgian attitude towards it's colony Congo was at least very paternalistic, and this was still so almost 30 years later at it's independance. The album is really rather silly nowadays, but, at least here in Belgium, it is still treasured for it's historic value. You'll probably won't find it in the kid's section, probably more likely in specialised stores.

In case you haven't heard, as it's been kept pretty quiet by the publishers, the colour edition of 'Tintin in the Congo' will be published in English for the first time tomorrow (5th September 2005). The ISBN is 1405220988 and it's £9.99 RRP.

I have it in both Swedish and French. It isn't very good, so if you aren't a big fan of Tintin I don't think it's worth the effort.

Read it a while ago. There's a segment where Tintin "accidentally" kills QUITE a few animals if I remember correctly which is a bit disturbing, and not at all funny, although it is presented as a funny episode (I think). The character of Tintin that emerges in "America" or "Cigars of the Pharaoh" is quite different.

i don't enjoy this story as much as the other ones, but it was one of the first published, and i bought for collection. if you really want to buy it, then i suggest Beyond Comics. they have many new and used comics, and most of them are in very good condition. you can also buy other no-so-popular-comics-in-the-u.s, like asterix, lucky luke, etc.

"Tintin au Congo" has always been one of my favorites.

If you like movies like "Commando", then you'll love Tintin in Congo!

This album is just as accessible in Iceland as any of the others (apart from Tintin in the Soviet Union which hasn't been translated). There's however one replacement scene been made in the 1970s to the album. A scene where Tintin blows up a rhino with a stick of dynamite was removed.

It's been a while, but I believe Tintin deliberately collects big game animal trophies, and the natives look like bone in the nose cannibals, so it hasn't been politically correct for a long time.

its actually really hilarious. i believe tintin shoots an ape and wears his skin as a disguise.

reply

My God yes. This is one of the funniest Tintin books because of its over the top, ridiculous ideas. Like the monkey skin. And the rhino getting blown up.

The version currently available was revised by Hergé to tone down the paternalism and racism of the original. By modern standards, it's still pretty bad. At this stage Hergé was still establishing the character, and the story in Congo has none of the sophistication that began to emerge with Tintin in America (which has its own non-PC moments, with Tintin saying to Milou; "Look, Milou! A real redskin!" As he says this, the Indian is sitting a few feet away and Tintin is taking his picture. Yeesh.

We report, you decide; but we decide what to report.

reply

No because even if you can get passed all the racist stuff and the political incorrectness it isn't worth it to be looking for it because this book is BORING AS HELL definitely the worst Tintin book there is.

reply

This is true.
Tintin in Congo simply sucks.
