Jack in Season 5

This show is an ensemble, but Jack always seems to be the main character overall. However he seems to be a minor character in Season 5 almost like he is just in the background except in his focus episode. Was Matthew Fox busy filming another show or movie or something necessitating his character being limited?

It was the way the narrative progressed. Everything was happening on the island. Jack didn't get back to the island until a 3rd of the way through the season so he became less of a central focus.
