Not having read the article, I'd venture a guess that they're both completely different shows. The fact that it's the "same character" amounts to little when the age and setting are so vastly different.
YS is not my thing at all. Not saying it's bad for what it is, just not for me. The BBT I sometimes enjoy, at least moments here and there in the first few seasons. As with most sitcoms that I like (to varying degrees), I typically enjoy the early seasons and then lose interest the longer the duration.
It's a show about smart people, but is not written for or aimed at a smart audience.
