That song sounds a LOT like songs(and musical tunes, not lyrics) that Alexander Payne has used in other of his films to create a melancholy mood. Moreover, the entire SCORE has that melancholy. There are echoes of the scores of Sideways, Nebraska, and About Schmidt here. And even The Descendants, with its Hawaiian music motif, sometimes sounds as sad.
