Don't remember it back in the 70s
1st time I've seen it and not impressed
The Brown Bess was designed as an "Assault Rifle"
Pretty much the same character --- "Good Ole Boy"

Only a small point--- She was a little crazy , she could blame on her upbringing,
But Rape???
Considering her business, I know that doesn't qualify rape but 7 fucking times and NO Police report, on a rape,
Saw it when it came out --- I was 14
IT is my favorite Romance Movie of ALL time
Audrey and Albert BOTH did a fine job
I just looked at her Wikipedia Bio and I'd say she was good with the sentence. Looked forward to it
Remember this is Hollywood TRUTH is only important if it doesn't get in the way of the story
Try to watch the longest version you can find --- I honestly forgot the length , close to 3 hours, Maybe the Directors edition
They must have thought about it in advance of the riot
Saw it when it got in the theater --- The original Short, cut-up version --- Don't recall any special or negative reaction --- But the there are a lot of movies people don't get up and cheer --- I did know a couple folks there and 1 did mention he thought it was cut up and could have been better
