What did you watch this week big? (03/31-04/06)

What a week what a week! Went to Montréal to see the Canadiens VS Leafs game and today we went shopping on St-Catherine. It was awesome.

My movies:

Return of the living dead 3 (1993 Tubi): Here was my thought process when seeing Melinda Clarke in the beginning of this film: Oh wow, she’s beautiful! She reminds me of someone… who is it? A Quebec actress maybe? No… wait… I know who this is! It’s Julie Cooper!!! Niiiice! (If you know, you know) Plus she is also called Julie in this film. PLUS I got to see her boobs plenty!😁There was also a man that looked like a cross between Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford and his son who looked like Edward Furlong, Ryan Gosling and Keanu Reaves had a baby. Anyways, I’m glad I finally knocked this one off my list. There is a lot of silliness, the story is very simple but it didn’t disappoint. Just what to expect and maybe even a little more. My rating: 7/10

Breakthrough (2019 DVD): “When her 14-year-old son drowns in a lake, a faithful mother prays for him to come back from the brink of death and be healed.” This biography made for an emotional, positive, powerful and inspiring experience for the entire household. It is very satisfying to have a Christian true story movie with good budget and solid actors. My rating: 7/10

Saw X (2023 DVD): As a fan of the franchise, I’m struggling to review this. As a drama about one of the greatest horror movie killers of all time, it was good. As a traditional Saw movie (crazy story filled with twists, turns and shocks) it’s not really great or exciting. Normally, just the theme song gets me all cranked up but I didn’t even remember hearing it this time. Was it even there? Another important detail for me was the lighting. Some scenes had questionable light while others, like the entire scene in the rich lady’s house, were nothing short of sublime. Anyway, I liked it but would probably qualify as my 4th or 5th favourite. Random thought: For those of you who saw it; you know that crucial scene around the 30 minute mark when he realizes he been conned and they all left? Imagine if they added a scene where he goes outside of the building and his taxi had left. Ha! I’m so twisted, I know! My rating: 7/10

The blackening (2023 Blu-ray): Another movie that I was pretty excited to watch. Turns out it was not quite what I was expecting and I could call this somewhat of a disappointment but once I understood that they really went all-in with the spoof, over-the-tope and borderline offensive style comedy, I was able to let go of how great I was hoping it could be and enjoyed the actual silliness of it all. I did have a few laughs and honestly, I would spend one night playing games with these people. My rating: 6.5/10

Poolhall junkies (Friday night special): A competently made film with at least 4 truly memorable scenes. The rest was just solid stuff. Nothing to complain about in my part here. My rating: 7/10

Creating Rem lazar (Friday night treat): I guess I can say I’m glad I watched it. I thought I’d be mostly annoyed by this but no. Au contraire, it has this bizarre je ne sais quoi that made it a strange and unique experience. My rating: 5.5/10

Killer workout (Friday late night special): It was exactly what you can expect it to be. A terribly bad movie that is enjoyable and fun to watch on many levels. Looking past all the sexy aerobics, muscular fights and bloody murders, I somehow ended up interested in the characters and what was going on. Even if it was really stupid stuff. He! It barely has a dull moment and made for a perfect Friday late night flick. My rating: 6/10

Lowlife (Saturday night special): I enjoyed the part with the Mexican luchador, I liked the part with the motel woman, I also liked the part with the two thugs and in the end, their lives collided together with great fashion. I think the motel girl was a good actress and would like to see more movies with her. I’m a bit tired of people always comparing this kind of movies to Tarantino‘s work BUT, one thing I would definitely compare this to is one of my favourite movies; Wayne Kramer’s The pawn shop chronicles. Lowlife is not as great but definitely similar. It’s brutal, unpredictable, funny and filled with colourful characters. My rating: 7/10

Breakthrough (2019) was directed by Roxann Dawson, an actress who played the engineer in the TV series, Star Trek: Voyager.

I didn’t know.

Hockey isn't a real sport. You should watch football instead.

The blackening 6/10
Creating Rem lazar 7/10
Killer workout 6/10
Lowlife 3/10

I watched:

Behind the Green Lights 1935 6/10 This was fine, not bad, but I have seen much better film noir.

Black Easter 2021 What happens if you cross a low budget sci-fi time travel flick with a Christian movie about Jesus? The answer is Black Easter, an odd and convoluted film that remains strangely compelling and entertaining, despite its flaws. An extremist wants to send a military team back in time to kill Jesus before the crucifixion to prevent the rise of Christianity. There is lots of jumping around in different timelines by multiple characters and I'm not sure how much of it actually makes sense. Performances are hit and miss. Morgan Roberts is the weakest link as the main scientist and narrator, whose performance is not very believable or interesting. The narration is especially ineffective and takes away from the film. Lamar Usher makes the most of his character as a scientist who has the film's best scene, a humorous conversation about movies with Jesus. Dialogue ranges from cliched and cheesy to sometimes funny and amusing. The tone feels all over the place, but in spite of all of the films shortcomings there are enough enjoyable elements to make this time travel Jesus mash up movie worth checking out.

Underground 1998 7/10 Good performances and some effective and fantastic moments.

The Killer Must Kill Again 1975 6/10 This was fine, but I have seen much better.

Easter Bunny Kill! Kill! 2006 6/10 It takes a while to get going and the first part isn't very fun. It eventually picks up steam and has some entertaining moments. Acting is fine for this kind of movie.

Caged 1950 8/10 Good performances in this well made women's prison film.

Prank Squad 2023 8/10 Watched on Tubi. A group of innocent children involved in a prank war have their childhood dreams smashed when one of them is abducted by an evil couple. They must put aside their differences and work against the clock to save the little girl. This is a gritty and dark crime drama that pulls no punches. The film is anchored by the brave and powerhouse performances from the main little girls. This disturbing neo noir thriller builds suspense until finally reaching a shocking and hard hitting conclusion. Recommended if you like raw and edgy independent dramas.

The Bracelet of Bordeaux 2007 4/10 The best thing about this film is the two cute girls in the lead roles. I found them endearing, in spite of the film's many weaknesses. The writing is really bad and the performances of the adult actors are all too over the top and completely ineffective. The film isn't very funny or entertaining and feels longer than it is. It isn't well made and feels like it was thrown together by amateurs with a really low budget. Despite the pretty young leading ladies best efforts, this film doesn't work.

Madison 2020 7/10 Felice Ahrens does a good job and the film is fairly interesting. I liked the cinematography as well.

Born to Be Bad 1950 6/10 Acting is good, but the film itself is just alright.

Angel on Abbey Street 1999 7/10 I thought this was interesting with good performances.

Smoke Sauna Sisterhood 2023 9/10 It's a documentary from Estonia about women in a sauna talking about their lives and experiences. This is a beautiful and compelling film.

Popular Theory 2023 7/10 Charming and likeable performances from Sophia Reid-Gantzert and Lincoln Lambert highlight this cute and amusing film.

Girls State 2024 7/10 Some really effective moments and I thought the girls were very interesting. I liked this one a bit more than Boys State.

Regrouping 1976 8/10 It's an experimental type of documentary about women, feminism, and sexuality in the 70s. I thought it was interesting the way it was filmed and edited. This wasn't what I expected, but it worked well for me. I was surprised by the nudity, but I enjoyed it.

Born in Flames 1983 7/10 This is somewhat interesting, but not everything works.

Killer Workout 1987 6/10 Not very good, but some fun moments.

Creating Rem Lezar 1989 7/10 This was weirdly amusing. I liked it.

Micah and Jane Bullies Beware 2018 4/10 This felt really inconsistent and all over the place. The parts focusing on the kids were fairly amusing and the young actors did a fine job. The adult actors were not very good and the scenes focusing on them didn't fit with the film. Some of the writing was pretty bad and the humour was just stupid. This might have been a decent family comedy if they focused just on the kids.

There’s a Girl in My Soup 1970 6/10 Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn are both good here, but the film isn't as funny or entertaining as it should be.

Erin’s Guide to Kissing Girls 2022 7/10 This was cute and enjoyable. I thought the young cast did a good job in their roles.

Monkey Up 2016 6/10 Talking monkeys make me happy.

Kalifornia 1993 (rewatch) 8/10 Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis are fantastic in this entertaining and effective thriller.

Lowlife 2017 3/10 This sucked. I didn't like the performances or the characters. The screenplay wasn't very good and I didn't find this entertaining at all.

Prank squad: you’re kidding right? You have to be kidding.

I like monkeys too.

Saw X was an 8/10. First Saw movie I've enjoyed in so many years. Not a huge fan of how it all turned into "torture porn", personally.

Went on a trip this week with someone who's afraid of flying & hates trains. So I had to "endure" 8+ hours of sitting on a bus.

Anyways, they had a tv in there & we watched:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) - Never gave this film its fair dues. Always thought it was the weakest in the trilogy. I was wrong. My first rewatch in years & it's a damn good film. Gets overshadowed by its sequels but it deserves some love. 8.5/10

Brick Mansions (2014) - One of Paul Walker's final films & boy is it bad. I'd seen the original French film, District 13, in my teen years & it was excellent. This was just dull. Bad acting, bad dialogue & bad action. 3/10

Apocalypto (2006) - One of my all time faves. I've seen it an unhealthy amounts of times. 9/10

Cold Skin (2011) - Never heard of it. Pretty solid Sci-fi horror though. It was urprisingly pretty entertaining. Starring the late Ray Stevenson. 7/10

Scared of flying and hates train! Lmao 🤣 Sorry but your friend is a pussy and I wouldn’t travel with him.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes: 7.5/10

Brick mansions: As a big fan of Banlieu 13, yeah, this sucked big time. 4.5/10

Apocalypto: 8/10

Movies

-The Goonies (1985)
Easter is the right time for a family movie, so I decided to go with this one. I really liked it as a kid, but remembered not liking it very much when I saw it again as an adult. This time didn't really change my mind. The plot is all over the place, the pacing is inconsistent and I really hated the Chunk/Sloth plotline. And man, what a dark tone and adult humour for a kid's movie!

-Double Indemnity (1944)
Saw this one on the big screen. Definitely one of the better film noir movies. Now where is hownos to discuss this one?!

-Face/Off (1997)
Saw this one on the big screen as well. I hadn't watched it in 20 years. It's an absolutely ridiculous movie, but it works mostly because of the two main actors, especially Travolta. A shame there were a bunch of annoying jerk-offs in the audience.

TV shows

-Psych - marathon

-Dallas - marathon

Bodies (2023) - Netflix - Adult themed time travelling caper - very good 8/10.

3 Body Problem - Netflix - Intelligent sci-fi thriller - very good 8/10.

I’ll have to check them out! If I live long enough…

reply

Bodies is an 8 episode complete series.

3 Body Problem is only 8 episodes (Season 2 to follow).

So, they can be quickly binged.
