How did people (as kids & teens anyway) live without video games?

Whether on consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo, Sega and X-Box or PC games or stuff on smartphones these days - how did they manage? Like, what did they do instead to have fun whether they were available or not in spare and private time, thanks. :)

Go outside.

👍

There was ALWAYS plenty of things to do when I was a kid! Still is, as a matter of fact😎

There's more to life than video games, texting & social media, kids. Get out & explore!

"Go outside."

Haha, I can almost read that reply as both an answer AND an advice for what someone like me has to do instead of constantly typing here, and occasionally (I still play PS3 sometimes, mostly Call of Duty) playing a game console, lol. :)

Video games hit the commercial market when I was a little kid. Before then the arcade had electromechanical games and pinball.

I asked my grandparents what they did before cable TV. They didn't remember and said they would have to ask their 23 brothers and sisters.

reply

Simple - we went outside and played ball.

Two friends had basketball courts in their driveways.

Touch football in the street. Regular football in the yard of a very nice lady who let us play in it.

Wiffleball in my front yard.

Then of course regular baseball at the field of our school.

ALways outside, always playing sports.

IN the winter, sledding and snowball fights. I had some friends that played hockey at the pond where they lived.

Oh that's easy. Kids went outside, or into town and socialized with other kids. They would play ball in the parks, hang out at the mall, go to arcades, get in trouble with the neighbors due to kid or teen shenanigans, stuff like that.

reply

Kids always find fun things to do.

You'd ride your bike, you'd play sports, you'd play boardgames, you'd go to movies.

Kids still do these things.

I also have to wonder... some of my earliest memories are of playing Enduro, River Raid and Pitfall! on the Atari 2600.

reply

I remember playing River Raid at Sears for the first time - it was amazeballs.

I used to hangout at Sears playing Atari games.

In my neck of the words, Sears showcased Atari and Woolco showcased Intellivision.

Sadly, no one showcased Colecovision.

As a kid of the 70's and 80's, I went outside alot and played stuff like "Kill the man with the ball" or baseball with the neighbor friends, rode BMX Bikes & skateboards and I did have a videogame, but it was Pong that eventually ended up with Atari 2600 and a Air Hockey table about 6 feet long
